education meaning, definition & types difference

1. Meaning of Education

The word "education" is derived from two Latin words:

  • Educare: Which means "to bring up" or "to nourish."

  • Educere: Which means "to draw out" or "to manifest."

Fundamentally, education is the process of facilitating learning. It is not just about acquiring facts, but about drawing out the hidden potential, skills, values, and habits of an individual. It is a continuous, lifelong process that shapes human behavior and character.

2. Definition of Education

Different thinkers have defined education based on their philosophies:

  • Swami Vivekananda: "Education is the manifestation of the perfection already in man."

  • John Dewey: "Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself."

  • Nelson Mandela: "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."

3. Types of Education

Education is broadly classified into three categories:

A. Formal Education

This is the structured, systematic, and chronological education system we are most familiar with. It is intentionally provided by specialized institutions like schools, colleges, and universities. It follows a strict curriculum, requires regular attendance, and results in formal certification or degrees.

  • Examples: Earning a B.Sc., completing a Ph.D., or passing the UGC-NET exam.

B. Informal Education

This is the unstructured, spontaneous learning that happens naturally throughout a person's life. There are no classrooms, no set syllabus, and no exams. It is the wisdom gained through daily experiences, family interactions, society, and media.

  • Examples: Learning a mother tongue at home, picking up farming techniques by observing elders, or learning how to ride a motorcycle through practice.

C. Non-Formal Education

This is organized, intentional learning that takes place outside the traditional formal schooling system. It is highly flexible, learner-centric, and focuses on practical skills rather than strict academic degrees. There is usually no age limit.

  • Examples: Agricultural extension programs, training camps at Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), adult literacy missions, and online certification courses.

BASICS OF COMMUNICATION PROCESS

1.1  Introduction

Communication is a process by which two or more people exchange ideas, opinions, facts, feelings or expressions in a way that each gain a common understanding of the message being communicated. In fact, we cannot imagine life without communication; since it is an in-built function helping us in our day-to-day activities. In this chapter, various aspects of communication have been dealt with, the details of which are given as below:

Communication process is a continuous and life-long process. It is a dynamic, constantly moving, ever-changing and on-going process.

Basic purpose of communication= Creation of MEANING

1.2  Meaning

Meaning exists in the mind of the PEOPLE, but not in the WORDS! In fact, communication vehicles (viz. words, symbols signs) dont have meaning in/of themselves, but people have meaning for them!! Moreover, MEANINGS arent TRANSMITTABLE in nature!!
